River Cottage House

A day at River Cottage with Muck Boot

I was invited to join other journalists and influencers for a day at River Cottage last September to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Original Muck Boot Company last autumn.

Arriving at the entrance at the top of their farm track. We waited for our tractor and trailer to arrive whilst enjoying a cup of mulled cider and admiring the view over the valley.

Down we trundled, arriving at a beautiful set of farm outbuildings and the main house. Feeling a bit peckish I helped myself to a few blackberries from the hedgerow.

Before being ushered into the River Cottage kitchen to enjoy refreshments, we were introduced to the new ranges. A particular favourite of mine is the Muckmaster Hi Wellington Boot – perfect for life on the farm in the winter, when the ground conditions can get a little muddy to say the least.

Next up was a tour of the famous kitchen garden. Everything looked and tasted amazing – we got to pick and taste some of the incredible selection of herbs available.

We then got to tour the rest of the farm. We checked out their polytunnels, met some of the farm animals and even did some propagation with strawberry plants.

My absolute favourite activity of the day was the outdoor cookery school. Not least, because I love cooking on fire and their simple setup showed how easy it is to create an outdoor kitchen.

One recipe in particular that blew my mind was the River Cottage’s Pit-baked breast of lamb recipe. You can read the full recipe and method over on the Muck Boot blog here

We finished up the day in the beautiful River Cottage dining room to enjoy a feast including many of the fresh, seasonal ingredients from the farm.
