Farm Families Photography

We caught up with Photographer Rob MacInnis to ask him about his farm series..

We’re big fans of your farm families photography – can you tell us a bit more about the inspiration behind your farm series?

The whole thing started when I was doing my undergrad at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.  I was doing a lighting class and everyone seemed to want to photograph pretty girls in a pile of makeup.  I felt the world had enough of those and critiqued the tendency towards physical consumption by beautifying what we consume quite literally; the farm animal. Since then I’ve enjoyed building a whole world which closely mimics our own but features animals as rulers of their own destiny.

It’s hard to imagine how you managed to capture such ‘orchestrated’ stylised farmyard scenes – would it be wrong to assume a degree of photoshop wizardry was involved in creating the final images?

How does working with farmers and their livestock compare to the fashion world?

Working with farmers has been the most rewarding part of this project, due to their otherworldly commitment and generosity.  They truly are a breed of their own.

And finally do you have any tips for budding livestock photographers out there?

Flexibility is useful when animals innately won’t do what you want.  Surprise is essential and a requirement of the process.
